Solitaire Engagement Rings - The Timeless Splendor of Single Diamond Engagement Rings

Proposing a marriage will not be complete without the ring. Now, it will not be hard to find one. There are local jewelry stores and designer houses that cater the needs of a man looking for the special piece. The Internet is also a proof of how overwhelming the array of styles, stones, setting, and price range of engagement rings are. There are thousands of carefully crafted, beautifully designed engagement rings out there that choosing just one ring seems to be a daunting task. But despite this wide range of ring styles to choose from, there is one that surely stands the test of time and is still a popular choice nowadays: solitaire engagement rings.

What solitaire engagement rings are?

Solitaire engagement rings, or solitaire rings in general, are rings with a solitary stone on a simple but elegant metal band. The famous jewel designer company, Tiffany's & Co., introduced the first solitaire diamond ring in 1886. It was a diamond on a six-prong setting.

Diamond is still a popular choice for solitaire ring, though other stones may also be used like ruby, emerald, tanzanite, and sapphire. A solitaire diamond ring is a safe bet unless the girl, for some reason, hates diamonds.

The uniqueness of solitaire engagement rings is the ability to enhance the beauty of the diamond. While in most rings the design is the most important, in solitaire engagement rings the emphasis is on the diamond.

Which setting to choose?

Choosing the setting of a solitaire ring is just as important as choosing the stone that goes with it. An appropriate setting will enhance the beauty of the ring giving the single center stone all the focus it deserved. On the other hand, a loosely chosen or created setting may not compliment the stone or worse overpower its look thus destroying the overall look of the ring. For a solitaire ring, go for either prong or bezel setting.

In a prong setting thin metal claws support the stone, while a thin sheet of metal surrounds the stone in a bezel setting. The good thing about prong setting is that it allows as much light as possible to enter and makes the stone shine brilliantly, which is just what is desired from diamond stones. One of the most popular prong settings is the Tiffany mount, named after the company that famed this setting. Tiffany mount, a popular setting for solitaire diamond ring, has prongs holding the stone and attached on a simple metal band. Tiffany mount, showing off that diamond, may enhance the radiance of the gem. When done in good quality, the prongs are firmly attached to the stone and has a well finished so the ring will not snag on clothes or other fabric.

Prongs, however, provide less protection to the gem than bezel does, and hence not a good choice on trillion cut diamonds or soft stones as emerald and opal. Bezel setting enhances diamonds that it makes them appear larger; it offers protection and is perfect for trillion cut or marquise diamonds but it does not allow much light to enter and thereby may reduce the brilliance of a diamond. If that is the concern, a half-bezel, a bezel with a slit part, is a good alternative.

When coming to choose from designs of solitaire engagement rings, keep in mind that (especially in prong setting) the diamond is almost completely visible, this means that you will have to go for a high quality diamond.

Who is the ring for?

A solitaire engagement ring, a classic way of displaying one's love that will probably stay for generations to come, is still sought-after because it makes a simple yet bold statement. What else could show how captivating a single piece of stone can be?

Solitaire engagement rings, you are the one that choose the design, but most important is to be sure that this is what your loved one wants. Remember the decision is yours, but she needs to like it.
